Renovation Project Updates

Sunday, February 14th

At noon on Sunday, February 14th we inaugurated and consecrated the actual construction phase of our project to repair, reshape, and improve this old building for our mission. The rite of groundbreaking took place outside at the place where a new entrance to the church will be created to give access and welcome to refashioned office, fellowship and education spaces. This is an exciting time for us as a congregation, and a witness to the vitality and faith that the Holy Spirit works in our midst. Let us therefore rejoice, give thanks, and pray to be kept faithful to our faithful God.

Winter Walk On Sunday, March 14th

HomeStart is a non-profit agency whose mission is to end and prevent homelessness for the thousands of homeless individuals and families currently staying in shelters, motels and on the streets in the Greater Boston area. Unlike shelters and food pantries, homeless services that you may be most familiar with, HomeStart’s critical programs are housing focused. They help over 350 people per year find permanent, affordable homes of their own. Our parish supports organizations of compassionate care and witness, like HomeStart.

Over the past 6 years, HomeStart has held a Winter Walk in the Sherborn/Holliston area with over 200 walkers each year and $72,000 total raised. This year, in looking to duplicate the success of this event, HomeStart is looking for the support of the Newton interfaith community.

Everyday, more than 7,000 people walk the wintered streets looking for a place they can call home. We invite you to do the legwork with HomeStart to help end their search!

On Sunday, March 14th, Winter Walk starts at 1pm. The commencement of the Walk will be at the United Parish of Auburndale (64 Hancock Street) and will end at Lutheran Church of the Newtons (1310 Centre Street). We have brochures available at the church office. You can register today online at www.regonline.com/ww2010newton. If you have questions, please contact Missions Committee Chairperson Serina Barkley at 617-529-3995 or sbarkley@dwyercollora.com or Paula Kramer at HomeStart at 617-542-0338 x264 or kramer@homestart.org. To learn more about HomeStart, visit www.homestart.org.

Offering Envelopes….

… for 2010 are now available in the narthex. They are arranged alphabetically with members having the same number as they had last year. Council members will find their envelopes in their boxes in the church office and choir members will find their boxes on the organ bench.

Together we can fight the flu. Last week was this year’s National Influenza Vaccination Week, but the threat and the need to act did not end when the week was up. This flu season has presented our community with a unique challenge to fight a new type of influenza – the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus.

The H1N1 flu is a serious disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that between mid-April and November 14, 2009 47 million people in the United States were infected with the 2009 H1N1 flu, more than 200,000 people were hospitalized, and over 9,800 people died.

Influenza is unpredictable and we do not know the likelihood of a future wave of H1N1 flu, but we do know that vaccination is the most important step in protecting against influenza. Protect yourself, your family and your community by getting vaccinated. Visit www.flu.gov to find the closest vaccination clinic and learn more facts about the H1N1 flu. Show your love to your family and our community by keeping yourself and those close to you healthy; get yourself and your family vaccinated.
